TFF1871 - A Working Lunch

Poppy was in the middle of an important call, her patience already wearing thin, when she noticed the disturbance. A group of tiny men had invaded her desk, scurrying around her laptop like confused ants. Annoyed but unable to hang up, she brushed them off the edge, sending them tumbling down to the beige expanse of the office carpet. But out of sight did not mean out of mind. Still chatting on the phone, she decided to multitask. She stood up, her bright red high heels transforming into terrifying, descending monoliths for the men below. With casual, crushing steps, she began to thin the herd, the sharp clicks of her heels on the floor punctuating the end of several tiny lives.

But the heels were too precise, too detached. She wanted to feel the work. Kicking off her red pumps, she continued the extermination barefoot. Now, the survivors faced the overwhelming, soft smothering of her soles. She pressed down, grinding them into the carpet pile, her toes curling with satisfaction as she extinguished them one by one. Finally, only one remained.

The call ended. Silence returned to the office. Poppy leaned down, her giant face looming over the last survivor, a terrified speck on the floor. She smiled, a look of pure, predatory amusement. With delicate fingers, she plucked him from the carpet and lifted him into the air. He wasn't a pest anymore; he was a reward. She opened her mouth, popped the struggling morsel inside, and with a satisfied swallow, sent him down to the depths. She licked her lips, smoothed her blue dress, and turned back to her computer. It was important to stay fueled during the workday, after all.
