It’s lovely how ladies can just lift their dress to show you all of their knickers. Lucy’s lace-panelled black ones are really pretty, and I just have to keep looking at how she adjusts the leg elastic.

The name Lucy is special to me because I have known a lot of women called Lucy. They were all kind to me about how interesting knickers are, and I got lots of advice, permission to try on, and laughter. Fun is everything. One particular Lucy, who could see I wanted to ask something, said “You have to approach a woman …” . I thought she meant to ask her out, but no, it was “You have to approach a woman if you want to ask to wear her knickers.” Then she said her favoured answer to give to anyone who asked, for example, if he could try a pair of her knickers on was “ ‘As long as it’s comfortable!’ ” . She saw my face taking in the niceness of such an answer, and she started laughing, knowing that she had made my day with just a few words. They were black lace bikinis, and looked great and felt amazing.
